Nissan Frontier and Xterra Recall - Latest Info
Nissan North America Inc. recently announced the recall of its 2002-2004 model Frontier and Xtrerra vehicles, due to a problem associated with the steering columns fitted to these vehicles. The recall affects all Nissan Frontier vehicles that were manufactured between July 9, 2001 and October 20, 2004, as well as all Nissan Xterra vehicles that were manufactured between July 9, 2001 and January 6, 2005.
This recall was announced following the discovery that the lower steering column joints in these vehicles were prone to corrosion, which could limit the movement of this joint over time. This limited movement of the lower steering column joint could in turn create excessive loads on the lower steering column shaft during low speed maneuvers which require high steering inputs, which could then lead to the failure of the steering column. The failure of the steering column would significantly increase the risk of the vehicle becoming involved in a crash, so this fault is being treated as serious.
Owners of vehicles affected by this recall are requested to contact their local Nissan dealers, who will replace the faulty steering column and joint with new, redesigned components. Owners who require further information regarding this fault may contact Nissan North America Inc. on 1-800-647-7261.
